Oxcarbazepine trileptal bipolar disorder

How does this medication work? What will it do for me?

Trileptal belongs to the class of medications called antiepileptics. It works by affecting the nervous system and helping to control the balance of chemicals in the brain. The medication may be used to treat epilepsy, migraines, or other mental illnesses.

If you are taking Trileptal, you should read the medication leaflet carefully before taking it and carefully read it every time you get a refill. You will need to ask your doctor if you need to take the medication with food or milk or any other foods.

If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first. They will be able to provide you with an explanation of the possible side effects and direction of your medication.

What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medication?

You should tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to Trileptal, or if you have any other allergies. This medication may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Ask your pharmacist for a list of the ingredients.

It is important that you keep all doctor's and pharmacist's appointments, especially if you have any history of heart problems, blood pressure issues, or liver problems. Your doctor will monitor your heart rhythm and blood pressure while you are taking Trileptal.

Do not use Trileptal if you are taking other medicines called monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).

Before taking Trileptal, tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions, including if you:

  • have or have had a heart attack
  • have blood pressure issues
  • have liver problems
  • are pregnant
  • have ever had a stomach ulcer or bleeding problems
  • are taking a diuretic, such as lithium or furosemide
  • are allergic to any other medications, foods, dyes, or preservatives
  • are taking other medications for seizures such as warfarin
  • are taking the medicine to treat high blood pressure
  • are breastfeeding or pregnant
  • are a smoker
  • are a sedative or hypnotic
  • have any other conditions that make you sleepy or slow your breathing

You should also tell your doctor if you have:

  • a blood cell disorder or if you have a seizure
  • seizures
  • a heart rhythm problem
  • any kidney or liver problems

Before taking Trileptal, tell your doctor if you:

  • have diabetes
  • have diabetes or a history of high blood pressure
  • have low levels of sodium in your blood
  • have high levels of potassium in your blood

This medication may be taken with or without food.

Tell your doctor about all the medicines you are taking, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. This includes prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and vitamin pills, as well as vitamins and supplements. You should know that Trileptal may reduce the effectiveness of some medicines. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

You should know that your heart can slow down the rate at which the flow of blood to your heart is affected. This may cause abnormal heart rhythms, such as fainting or palpitations. If you have a heart rhythm problem or are taking any other medicines, you should also know that Trileptal may slow down the rate at which the flow of blood to your heart may be affected. Your doctor will probably prescribe a different medication if Trileptal is not effective.

If you have not told your doctor about any of the above, tell them before you start taking Trileptal. You may need to wait a few days before getting in the habit of taking the medication.

Overview Trileptal (Oxcarbazepine) Tablets

Trileptal (Oxcarbazepine) Tablets are a powerful anticonvulsant drug used to treat seizures associated with epilepsy. These tablets work by helping the brain to calm down the electrical activity in the brain.

Trileptal is available in the strength of 25 mg, 50 mg and 75 mg, in 10 tablets and 20 tablets per package. Trileptal is available in the strength of Trileptal XR.

How Trileptal works

Trileptal (Oxcarbazepine) blocks voltage-gated calcium channels in the brain. This means that the drug is able to inhibit the influx of calcium ions into neurons to cause the release of the neurons’ voltage. This helps to relax the muscles in the brain to calm down the electrical activity in the brain.

Trileptal also acts as an antiepileptic medication. This means that it works by helping to reduce the activity of the neurotransmitters acetylcholine and serotonin. This can be beneficial for adults and children with epilepsy.

Common side effects

  • dizziness
  • nausea
  • headache
  • tiredness
  • weight gain

Precautions to be taken before use

If you have any of these conditions, be sure to tell your doctor about all the medicines you are taking. This includes vitamins and herbal supplements, and medications that you are taking regularly.

Interactions with other medicines

Oxcarbazepine may interfere with the way Trileptal works with other medicines. Inform your doctor about all the medicines you take, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins and herbal supplements. This includes medications that you are taking regularly, as well as any other medicines that you are taking.

The first approved new anti-epileptic drug (or AED) to treat epilepsy was approved in the US in 2002. Since then, more than 50 medications have been approved, from a class of drugs called antiepileptic drugs. AEDs are a class of drugs that work by altering nerve impulses in the brain.

The new AED is called a trileptal. It is a combination of the antiepileptic drugs, or AEDs, and the non-epileptic drug, or PDE5 inhibitors. The AEDs are used to treat seizures, for example in the treatment of epilepsy.

While the FDA has not approved any AEDs for use in epilepsy, some doctors have prescribed them for other uses. Other drugs in this class also work by affecting the nerve pathways in the brain. This is called neurotransmitter or "serotonin." In the case of some medications, this is thought to be related to a specific type of neurotransmitter called monoamine. Examples of serotonergic drugs include:

  • Bupropion
  • Diazepam
  • L-lornithine
  • Nandrolone
  • Tramadol

This medication was developed as a novel class of anti-seizure drugs. It is a serotonin antagonist that does not affect the central nervous system, but may have some effect on the central nervous system. The drug also inhibits the serotonin transporter.

Another drug in the class of anti-seizure drugs is bupropion. It is an anti-seizure medication that works by preventing nerve cells from firing. Bupropion prevents the electrical activity in the brain from getting in the way of epilepsy seizures.

A few other drugs in this class also have serotonin effects. Examples include:

  • Seroquel
  • Trazodone
  • Desipramine
  • Doxepin
  • Elvanse
  • Fluvoxamine

The Food and Drug Administration has approved a new anti-seizure drug for the treatment of epilepsy. This medication is a serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI). The FDA says it will be approved for use in epilepsy in the US in 2012.

Some people who take the drug have a risk for seizures. If you take this medication and have epilepsy, you will likely have a high risk of seizures. Some people who take the AED have a risk for seizures too, but they should not take it.

The FDA has approved an anti-seizure drug to treat epilepsy. It will be approved in the US in the next month or so. The FDA will have a plan for treating patients with epilepsy in the next week or so.
